On October 17, Professor Wang Neng, a tenured professor of finance at Columbia University, was invited to WZBC to deliver an academic lecture titled “Greatest Ideas in Economics and Finance”. The event was attended by faculty and students from WZBC. Also present were Zhuo Gaozhu, former Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of the Wenzhou Municipal People’s Congress and Deputy Director of the Municipal Decision Advisory Committee, participants from a special training program for state-owned enterprise managers in Xiapu County, Fujian Province, as well as WZBC’s leaders Zhou Xiangzhe, Xie Jian, Li Yiming, Zhao Xinze, and Hu Jiang. The event was chaired by Vice President Zhang Xiaohong.
At 9:00 AM, the Academic Lecture Hall in Bowen Building was fully packed. Professor Wang Neng started his lecture by explaining the fundamental concepts of economics and finance, delving into the outstanding economists and classical theories in the history of global economic development. He covered various economic theories such as neoclassical economics, information economics, auction theory, corporate theory, contract and agency theory, strategic decision-making, and the Keynesian vs. Hayek debate. He also discussed case analyses including transaction costs, financial frictions and constraints, financial and banking crises, option pricing and the no-arbitrage paradigm, risk diversification, and the capital asset pricing model.
During the interactive session, Professor Wang answered questions from students on topics related to the investment and regulation of securities market, monetary expansion, and asset price fluctuations. Students and faculty members from our college, as well as graduate students from China Academy of Financial Research at Zhejiang University of Finance & Economics, listened to the lecture via live online streaming. Many expressed that Professor Wang’s lecture was rich in content, insightful in analysis, and seamlessly presented various examples. They appreciated the lecture for its profound theoretical insights and practical depth, emphasizing its significant practical value for learning finance and mastering financial knowledge.
Professor Wang Neng, born in 1973 in Dangtu, Anhui, graduated from the Youth Class of Nanjing University in 1992 with a major in physical chemistry. He obtained a Master’s degree in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1995 and earned his Ph.D. in finance from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2002. Currently, he serves as an academic committee member of Luohan Tang, a senior researcher at the National Bureau of Economic Research in the United States, and a senior researcher at the Asian Bureau of Financial and Economic Research.
Professor Wang’s primary research areas include corporate finance, asset pricing theory, and macroeconomics. He has made outstanding academic achievements in the field of finance, publishing numerous research papers in top-tier international finance and economics journals. He has also served as the editor and editorial board member for several international journals in the fields of business, finance, and economics, and has received multiple academic honors and awards in the field of finance.
