The 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou is coming to a close. Apart from three teachers and over 150 students participating in various roles related to the Asian Games, two alumni of WZBC have been serving as National Technical Officials (NTOs) for the basketball events. They are Chen Xunuo, an alumna from Zhoushan, Zhejiang, and Liu Chenjun, an alumnus from Lucheng, Wenzhou.

Liu Chenjun, a graduate from WZBC’s 2016 Marketing undergraduate program Class 1, is currently employed at a sports event company. He is responsible for organizing sports events for state-owned enterprises and government agencies.

After a series of selections and assessments by the Asian Basketball Confederation and the Chinese Basketball Association, he obtained the qualification as a National Technical Official for the basketball events at the Hangzhou Asian Games, which took place from September 26 to October 7, as well as the basketball events at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games from October 17 to October 29.

It is worth noting that “National Technical Officials” are referred to as NTOs, encompassing technical representatives, competition officials, referees, and measurement officials.

Liu Chenjun has been passionate about sports since childhood, practicing basketball and short-distance running since primary school. He started his career in basketball refereeing during university and obtained the Level 1 basketball referee certification in 2018. He has officiated various basketball competitions, including the 17th Zhejiang Provincial Games, the 9th “Basketball Association Cup” in Zhejiang, the CBA Youth Team Invitational, the Zhejiang Provincial Youth Basketball Finals, and the Wenzhou City Basketball Championship.

“It means a lot to me to be able to work as a referee at the Asian Games! I’m honored to participate in the Asian Games held in my hometown, and I’m very happy to contribute my efforts to the event. I’m truly grateful for the nurturing from my alma mater and the guidance from my teachers. I will definitely fulfill this mission successfully,” said Liu Chenjun.

Chen Xunuo, a graduate from WZBC’s 2013 Accounting undergraduate program Class 1, currently works in the finance department of a local state-owned enterprise. During her time at the university, she was awarded titles such as Outstanding Athlete in the Women’s A Group of Zhejiang Provincial University Basketball League and fourth place in the Women’s A Group of Zhejiang Provincial University Basketball League.

In July 2020, recommended by the local basketball association, she participated in the training and examination for the record table officials for the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games five-a-side basketball event. She successfully passed the examinations and tests for International Basketball Federation Continental Technical Officials, Asian Games Technical Officials, and test matches. At the end of July this year, she passed the examination conducted by the Chinese Basketball Association and subsequently received the appointment as a technical official for the five-a-side basketball events at the Hangzhou Asian Games and the 4th Asian Para Games.

Technical officials are mainly responsible for controlling equipment such as match time, shot clocks, and scoreboards during the competition. They record players’ scores, fouls, and other data, providing data support for the event and live broadcasts.

Every time the national anthem is sung in the packed stadium, Chen Xunuo, while working at the record table, feels an overwhelming sense of patriotism. She mentioned that this wonderful feeling cannot be experienced by watching the event on television. In her free time between matches, she interacts with foreign technical officials in the Asian Games Village. She feels that she has exhausted all her English, Korean, and Thai language skills accumulated over several years. She shared that the technical officials from the United Arab Emirates praised China for its orderliness, friendly people, and remarkably affordable products, saying, “We love China so much.” She also felt deeply moved when she heard a Korean technical official describe the Mid-Autumn Festival as “a romantic festival exclusive to the Chinese people”.

“As someone who did not major in basketball, I feel incredibly honored for this experience,” said Chen Xunuo. She pledged to do her best in the upcoming matches, present the best image, ensure accurate match data, and strive to successfully fulfill her mission at the Asian Games.
