“I’m just doing my part and doing a small thing, hoping to help someone in the distance.” At 11:30 on July 8, after 3 hours and 30 minutes of collection, Zheng Weiqing, a student of Wenzhou Business College, completed 288 ml Hematopoietic stem cell suspension donation. Born in 2001, he is also the 800th hematopoietic stem cell donor in Zhejiang Province, and is currently the youngest donor in the province.
Lying in the hospital bed, Zheng Weiqing told reporters, “Donate some blood and pass on some love.” He is honored to be able to help others. This effort is not worth mentioning. This is a “life-saving thing”.
Zheng Weiqing, from Wencheng, Wenzhou, is a student of the School of Information Engineering, Wenzhou Business College. At the end of June this year, he completed the last exam of the semester. As a fresh graduate, he was in a hurry to find a job, but it was put on hold because of the donation. Just 2 months ago, he was screened by the Chinese hematopoietic stem cell donor database and his blood type matched that of a young leukemia girl from another province.
In fact, the probability of successful matching of unrelated hematopoietic stem cells ranges from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 100,000, and many patients lose their precious lives because they cannot find matching hematopoietic stem cells. In December 2020, Zheng Weiqing joined the China Marrow Bank. Just a year later, the pairing succeeded. He couldn’t believe it so that he found his counselor Lin Ling for verification and started the donation process.
Zheng Weiqing, 1.8 meters tall, is a young and strong guy. In order to meet the donation conditions, he was suggested adjusting his routine and exercising. So for nearly a month, Zheng Weiqing got up and went to bed early every day, had three light meals, and keep running and playing badminton. After 4 re-examinations, it was finally certain that the match was successful in mid-June. He said, “A person will only meet one donor at most in his life. Maybe this is fate. That patient should have been waiting for me. I hope my blood can rekindle her hope of life.”
In Lin Ling’s eyes, Zheng Weiqing is always enthusiastic about public welfare and willing to give. After entering the college in his freshman year, Zheng Weiqing actively participated in various public welfare voluntary organizations such as unpaid blood donation organized by WZBC Red Cross and other organizations, and gradually learned about the donation process and significance of hematopoietic stem cells. The WZBC branch of the blood bank is committed to the urban voluntary blood donation work. In March last year, Zheng Weiqing served as the first vice president with his own efforts and outstanding performance, and actively participated in the promotion of voluntary blood donation and hematopoietic stem cell donation activities.
On the day of donation, leaders and representatives of Zhejiang Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donation Database Management Center, Wenzhou Red Cross Society and Wenzhou Business College came to the hospital to visit Zheng Weiqing, and highly praised his kindness, thanking him for saving the lives of others in a special way. It shows the noble moral sentiment and strong sense of social responsibility of contemporary college students.
It is worth mentioning that at present more and more college students in Zhejiang Province are participating in blood donation activities. Wenzhou Business College attaches great importance to caring education and volunteer service activities. On January 17, 2020, Ru Yang, a student of WZBC, became the youngest hematopoietic stem cell donor in Zhejiang Province, and now Zheng Weiqing have set a new record.
