“If I can save a life, it’s worth it.” At noon on July 19, Bao Chenwei, a sophomore student from the School of Information Engineering, completed the donation of 242ml of hematopoietic stem cell suspension after 6 hours of collection in a hospital in Hangzhou. This is another good deed in our college and it is also the third hematopoietic stem cell donor to emerge in two years.
At noon that day, Bao Chenwei was lying on the hospital bed and told Lin Ling, a counselor who had come to accompany him from Wenzhou, “I just did a small thing within my power, but I didn’t expect to disturb my alma mater.” He was honored to be able to help others. Although he was slightly uncomfortable, he was high-spirited.
Bao Chenwei is from Lishui, Zhejiang. This summer, when he stayed at his sister’s house in Hangzhou, he suddenly received a call from the Wenzhou Red Cross, asking him again about his willingness to donate. Four months ago, his HLA test data of the blood samples in the China Marrow Bank was successfully matched with a patient with hematological diseases, and later he successfully passed the high-resolution matching and physical examination.
Lin Ling said that Bao Chenwei received a call from the Wenzhou Red Cross at the end of June and learned that the patient had an emergency and needed to start the donation procedure urgently. He did not hesitate and immediately cooperated with the preparation for donation. His parents were worried that the donation would have a negative impact on his body, but Bao Chenwei was very firm, and successfully persuaded the parents with the donation cases of Ru Yang and his classmate Zheng Weiqing.
What is little known is that after the successful high-resolution matching, Bao Chenwei began to keep exercising, gaining 12 pounds of muscle in two months. If I could save a life, everything is worth it, he said.
Just on the 8th of this month, Zheng Weiqing, a fresh graduate of WZBC, became the 800th case of Zhejiang Province and the youngest hematopoietic stem cell donor in the province, saving the life of a patient with hematological diseases. As early as January 2020, the hematopoietic stem cells donated by Ru Yang, a 2018 e-commerce student in our school, also saved a young life, and he was also the youngest hematopoietic stem cell donor in Zhejiang Province that year. Their deeds have been praised by many domestic mainstream media such as Xinhua News Agency and CCTV News Client.
It is reported that the probability of successful matching of unrelated hematopoietic stem cells is 1 in 10,000 or even 1 in 100,000. “In just two years, there are three cases of hematopoietic stem cell donors in a university, which is rare.” He Jiajing, deputy director of the Zhejiang Provincial Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donor Database Management Center, believes that the miracle reflects the college’s priority to life education. It also shows the noble moral sentiment and strong sense of social responsibility of young students.
Nowadays, more and more college students are actively participating in the public welfare activities of donating hematopoietic stem cells. Among them, there are more than 1,000 members of the Red Cross of Wenzhou Business College, and nearly 10,000 volunteers of various types. The proportion of hematopoietic stem cell donors of post “90” and “00” in Zhejiang Province has increased year by year, and it has exceeded 40% in the past two years.
