The list of the winners of the 2022 Higher Education Society Cup National Undergraduate Mathematical Modeling Contest has been announced recently. The team consisted of Gu Yiqun, Yang Xintian, and Lin Ruibo won the National First Prize under the guidance of Professor Pan Jiandan with the work “The Component Analysis and Identification of Ancient Glass Products ”.
It is reported that whether it is general engineering technology, high-tech, in economic or archaeological fields, mathematical modeling is an indispensable tool to quickly and economically replace on-site experiments and physical simulations. Based on the relevant data of ancient glass relics, the award-winning work identified the type of glass relics through statistical law analysis and the establishment of a weathering degree model, with a prediction accuracy of 100%.
The winning in the National Undergraduate Mathematical Modeling Contest is extremely difficult but valuable. The Basic Teaching Department has long attached great importance to the National Undergraduate Mathematical Modeling Contest, and has specially set up a Mathematical Modeling Contest Guidance Team, which organizes students to make use of summer holiday and extracurricular time to carry out modeling contest training every year. This summer, Wang Wenqing, deputy director of the basic teaching department, coordinated and arranged all preparations for the competition. Teachers such as Kuang Fangjun, Qiu Xiaoli, Weng Zuoyi, Bai Zixian, Wan Kai and other teachers actively participated in the behind-the-scenes guidance of the Mathematical Modeling training.
The participating students said that the trophy is the symbol of the collective wisdom and painstaking efforts of teachers and students. In the simulated competition, the instructors earnestly guided the team members to familiarize with the competition rules, model construction and solutions, and the writing of modeling papers. The reasonable division of labor and cooperative exploration have greatly improved the participants’ innovation awareness, research ability and teamwork. Winning the award makes the participants more experienced on the road of life.
The National Undergraduate Mathematical Modeling Contest is sponsored by the China Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM). It has become the largest basic subject competition in colleges and universities in China and the largest mathematical modeling competition in the world. It is of great importance for cultivating college students’ practical innovation ability. The competition was founded in 1992 and is held annually. It is one of the first 19 competitions included in the list of “Subject Competitions in Colleges and Universities”. The 2022 competition attracted a total of 54,257 participating teams (49,424 undergraduate teams) from 1,606 colleges and universities in China, the United Kingdom, Malaysia and other countries, with more than 160,000 applicants.
