The 38th Teacher’s Day Celebration Conference in Wenzhou was held on September 9th, with the attendance of four leadership sets including Liu Xiaotao, Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee. At the meeting, awards such as the Special Education Gardener Award, Spring Silkworm Award, and Green Leaf Award were presented. Mr. Zhang Hanming, the founder of our college, was awarded the title of Green Leaf Award in Wenzhou City.
The “Green Leaf Award” is awarded in recognition of those caring individuals who show their great care and support for the development of education, and have made outstanding achievements in donating funds to aid students, investing in education, improving teacher benefits, and promoting rural educational conditions. The aim is to mobilize the enthusiasm of party committees, governments, and all sectors of society to support education.
The prize citation for Mr. Zhang Hanming at the conference is as follows: He is a leading figure in the Chinese gelatin industry, who has nurtured education through industry by founding Wenzhou Business College; and he is enthusiastic with charitable and public welfare undertakings, which won him the honors such as Zhejiang Good People in 2017, and one of the Top 10 Social Charitable Philanthropists in China in 2020. This year, Wenzhou Business College donated 10 million yuan to futher cultivate leading high school principals, which must be a powerful driving force for accelerating Wenzhou’s education as it enters into the fast lane period.
Mr. Zhang Hanming devoted himself to industry in his early years and began to establish higher education in 1999. In just over 20 years, Wenzhou Business School has developed rapidly and has been approved as a new awarding and construction unit in Zhejiang Province for master’s degree. It has been awarded the titles of Advanced Collective for Promoting Wenzhou’s High Quality Development and Zhejiang Province’s 4A level Safe Campus. From 2019 to 2022, it has been ranked as one of the top private universities in China for four consecutive years in the Wu Shu Lian Chinese Private University Rankings, and ranked first in terms of school selection.
Mr. Zhang Hanming adheres to the original aspiration of non-profit education and attaches great importance to the education of love and gratitude. Under the influence of his personal practice, all teachers and students of the college carried out charity and public welfare activities as common practices. Nearly ten thousand college students went to the countryside in seven years to help almost 200000 people, where has emmerged many impressive individuals and teams, such as the Self-Improvement Star of Chinese college students, Member Star of Red Cross Society of China, the youngest hematopoietic stem cell donor in Zhejiang Province, and the national demonstrative volunteer service team E-meter Sunshine and many other student teams for public welfare. The college also specifically planned to build a Love Education Hall this year.
“My donation is made for the sake of dreams, responsibility and gratitude, but not for any other reasons.” Mr. Zhang Hanming once said in an interview with a reporter from Zhejiang Daily. After learning that he has won the Green Leaf Award, many teachers in our college coincidentally stated that it is Mr. Zhang’s firm belief that we should strive to cultivate students to be excellent taxpayers in our country.
In 2005, Mr. Zhang Hanming teamed up with the media to launch the campaign Search for Poor Children in the city, pairing up with hundreds of impoverished students to fulfill their dreams. In 2006, the super typhoon Sangmei hit Wenzhou head-on. He lost no time in appealing to all teachers and students to participate in the rescue of children who lost their loved ones in the typhoon, and set up a Love Train with Wenzhou Charity Federation. At present, the Love Train has become a platform to transmit love for our university students to repay society. Almost 80000 college students have participated in more than 3700 volunteer activities, becoming a Golden Card to promote education on love and care for all faculties and students.
In 2015, Mr. Zhang Hanming donated 100 million yuan to set up the Wenzhou Ouhai District Charity Federation Zhang Hanming Charity Fund, and the fund operation office to carry out poverty alleviation and other volunteer activities, focusing on helping and rescuing the people in bad need of social help. At that time, he and his wife Chen Yumei were listed as the top 100 donors in the country. In 2016, Mr. Zhang Hanming was awarded The Fifth Zhejiang Charity Award.
In 2021, Mr. Zhang Hanming pioneered in investing over 100 million yuan to provide commercial supplementary pension insurance for faculties and staffs among universities across the country. It provided the faculties and staffs with an additional million yuan of commercial pension which could effectively enhance their senses of happiness and achievement, making profession of teaching much more enviable in a true sense.
